The World's First Test
Since first being showcased at the ITU Telecom World 2003 conference in Geneva, Switzerland in October, Samsung's 1xEV-DV system has been successfully tested by several North American wireless operators at their facilities. These carriers are evaluating the system for nationwide deployment. With this new system, wireless users can access simultaneous voice and data services with no loss of quality. Also, real-time video content such as cable TV, DVDs and movie previews are potential applications.
Currently Samsung is the only wireless manufacturer that can offer 1xEV-DV, several years ahead of the competition. By designing its own chipsets for handsets and infrastructure, the company can bring products to market faster. And, unlike other wireless data migration strategies, 1xEV-DV is backwards-compatible with 2G and 3G 1X, so existing devices can operate applications based on older standards.
"With 1xEV-DV, cable modem speed on a wireless device is now a reality," said Neal Smith, senior director of Samsung's wireless systems division. "As converged phones with camera and PDA capabilities replace the need for several disparate devices, consumer and business users will demand quality converged applications via their handhelds."

Samsung demonstrated video streaming and video conferencing capabilities via a wireless handset at the show.
SCBS-500 - Samsung Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
Samsung's next generation, multicarrier SCBS-500 BTS supports up to eight carriers and more than 3,400 channel elements in a single rack. The optional expansion rack increases system capacity to 15 carriers and more than 6,900 channel elements. The BTS is designed to dramatically decrease expenses by leveraging increased carrier density per rack to reduce upgrade needs and enhanced maintenance functions to minimize support costs. By increasing the power amplifier efficiency and reducing the number of modules and cards, Samsung's BTS allows for as much as a 60 percent savings in power consumption. The SCBS-500 supports both CDMA2000 and WCDMA and offers wireless operators with a seamless migration path to 1xEV-DV, smart antenna, four branch receive diversity and six Sector operation.
SCBS-500 Samsung Base Station Controller (BSC)
Samsung's 3G SBSC-500 BSC provides the high-speed performance required to support next generation services. The product ensures that increased bandwidth demands of high-speed data will not affect the voice quality users expect from CDMA technology, and the BSC utilizes a high-speed ATM backbone to virtually eliminate delays and ensure quick and efficient handoffs. Each BSC supports up to 128 BTSs and 3,840 voice channels with support for more than 193,000 Busy Hour Call Attempts per frame. The system offers increased capacity of up to 2 times the voice capacity from the current 2G systems.
